Thanks, glad I got the scoring right. Of course one couldn't really take a proper MMSE score from what was on the radio, it's just more interesting to be able to explain fairly abstract issues in psychological testing with reference to a familiar fictional character, rather than sounding like a textbook. I actually wrote this post after trying to explain Jack's treatment to a friend to practice for job interviews, because it raises a lot of very interesting technical & ethical issues. 'The Archers' have been good so far at portraying Jack's progress & the impact on his family, but oddly enough Borchester General Hospital seems untroubled by NICE guidelines.
It's a very complicated issue who gets what drugs, but one example of where being able to understand fairly technical concepts in psychology is important.

Just a quick note, you are interpreting the MMSE scoring correctly but to take a conclusion of 16 from a small part of the test is unfortunately not possible. Although you would expect a global deterioration there may be lacunae of ability. He may also have a fronto-temporal variety of dementia. Mind you with the NICE guidelines people with early cognitive impairment can't be given cholinesterase inhibitors and this is rather a shame as it would be nice to delay the decline in cognition at an early stage.
