From your description, the boy sounds very similar to my younger son, my older son has a severe speech disorder and is still quite learning disabled, but not autistic (history of seizures). He had a bit of a language use delay (which was noticed by older son's speech therapist), he did have some language therapy.

When he was three years old I even took him to older boy's neurologist for an evaluation where he was diagnosed as NOT autistic, but a very bright kid with some dysphasia (a bit slower learning language). He even surprised the neurologist by solving a puzzle very quickly. The big thing was he was a friendly engaging kid. When I would arrive to pick him up from preschool he would run at me to give me a big hug, and then show me what he was up to.

Now he is 17, and he tolerates me.. ;-). But he is very bright and is in advanced math, and will graduate from high school with two years of both chemistry and physics. Oh, and he works as a lifeguard (so as noted on Gimpy's blog is most likely more medically qualified than the homeopaths that post there!).

By the way, there is a Stanford University professor of economics who has also written about his child. That child had a similar developmental history, including speech therapy and is also now a computer scientist. This guy (Thomas Sowell) does not even credit the speech therapists, he just says that the kid grew out of it on his own (he is very politically conservative and seems to want to remove the rules in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). I wonder if he knows Lansky and her family?

I haven't read the book- or all of the article you are refering to. Great points. Since the Autism Spectrum has every shade of every color things that work for one person may not work for any other. We did some aromatherapy a few years ago and stopped at the request of J's teachers because of the other children's allergies.

Aromatherapy seemed helpful for calming but so is deep pressure massage... I know your point isn't about a specific therapy but thought worth mentioning.

Have you tried Ebay for the book?
